Passion That Resurfaces

Hajra Khatoon en Viviendo con Gusto

Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.” — Oprah Winfrey

A psychologist by profession, Hajra Khatoon has been through such a journey these past few years as she has been rediscovering her passion with gusto.

As a kid, I always loved writing. I thought it was the best thing ever happening to me and that I could be the best writer ever. But then, I was a kid. I could think anything and everything. Somehow I lost touch with the interest and shifted to different fields.

Through a stint with voluntary unemployment (which was longer than I hoped for) and encouragement from family, I went back to writing again. I began with freelance content writing and juggled between blogging and writing. And I love it. I do like my work but writing is what makes me really happy. That is how I discovered my passion – writing. Although I am more practical and don’t think of myself as the best, I am trying my best. I have also joined a freelance writing course to indulge in my love for writing.

Though many people go around for years searching for their one true passion, I feel it is right there in front of us. We just have to realize it. Maybe I was lucky enough to pick up the pen and write and find my passion. What if I had never thought about giving it a try? So I don’t really feel that you have to go out there. Whatever makes you happy and gives you that joy might as well be your passion. Writing is mine and I have been very lucky to find it.

What is one thing that has always made you happy that naturally became a passion for you?

  • People and their stories, listening to them tell them with occassional smiles and tears, peppered with laughter about times that only they experienced but love retelling to anyone who’ll listen. I love collecting those stories and adding them to the dry data of genealogy. They make ancestors long-forgotten come to life and matter to those still living.
But I’m once again in limbo with my passion because…I don’t know why!

    Great post. Thanks, Hajra!

    • It is always a pleasure reading your response. I am just glad I get to do what I like. Not everybody of us has that luxury.

Passion is what makes the world go round! 🙂

  • What a great quote by Oprah Winfrey – passion is energy. Lovely post, Hajra, and you are far too modest, I enjoy reading your blog posts, they are so varied in subjects but always great content and you manage to draw us all into discussion.

My great passion is cooking, or is it writing, or is it photography, or is it travelling? Lucky me: I can combine all passions on my blog.

  • Hi, Samantha, passion—the word conjures up image of total focus, total enjoyment and total satisfaction. I meet many types of clients, giving them advice on property transactions, trust arrangement and making claims against wrongful parties etc. Then, my mind goes into finding ideas and solutions as to how best to tackle what are being presented to me. I think my job as an advocate and solicitor is something enjoyable and as such is my passion. Apart from that, I write on self development and human relationship, in short prose, focusing on the essentials. That could be my hobby and not less my passion.

    • Wow, Sang! I wouldn’t typically think of being a lawyer as a joyful occupation, but when you describe it, your joy really shines through. What a great reminder that there can be true passion in any activity!

  • I like to view others and myself as multifacited, or multidimensional who have many passions . I believe that many people sell themselves short by limiting themselves to one pursuit or passion thereby limiting their potential to develop themselves more fully. I find that I have deveeloped and cultivated many passions throughout my life and feel that this has helped me become a better human being. Some of my passions in life have been a passion for Peru, a love for art, writing, philosophy, cosmology, and a constant passion for cultivating friendships with productive and worthwhile human beings such as yourself.

    • An important reminder, Vinny! Furthermore, as humans can grow and change, so too can our passions. I really look forward to new passions I may develop over time and living out my many passions as you do. 🙂

  • I love to read and it gets my creative juices flowing. I love being inspired by books and whenever I can get my hands on a book (which isn’t always easy in Peru as you know) I dive right in. I also consider music to be a passion of mine. I love creating it by playing my violin or by singing and I love getting new music and listening to old stuff. All in all, it makes me extremely happy and keeps me learning too. I guess overall learning is my overarching passion that includes the two.

    • Ooh! Do you have an ereader? I’ve been able to keep up with all my reading since I got a Kindle last year! I so envy your musical background. Music is such a source of happiness and I can imagine how much more fulfilling it can be when you create music regularly. 🙂

  • Hajra, what a lovely way to put it: “If you have more than one passion, then your life is such a joy!” Sometimes it is like trying to keep a thousand fleas in one hat (or could they escape from that?)!

    • Sometimes it might get too much to handle but I believe life is much more easier and enjoyable when we have known are passions and are in constant effort to work on them or incorporate them into our lives as much as we can!

  • Hajra, Over and over I’ve seen how a loss (such as your work loss) or a low point in life can lead to a rekindling of a passion. A passion for writing must be one of the most rewarding and fulfilling. This also happened to me when an old passion for writing resurfaced and gave meaning and hope to my life as I’m sure it has to yours.
