Huancayo Headlines: Media Influence and Self-Talk

Many people start their day in Huancayo by picking up something to eat on the street, such as a tamal or bread with fresh cheese and a quinoa drink, and then stopping at the local newsstand to read the headlines.

Puesto de Periódicos en Huancayo
In Huancayo, reading the headlines at newspaper stands is a typical activity.
My vocabulary has expanded from reading Huancayo newspapers. Sports and politics are popular topics; unfortunately, the most common and notable words I’ve learned are: ahorcarse (to hang oneself), violar (to rape) and pepera (women who seduce and drug men at parties, clubs or bars to rob them). It’s true that death and domestic abuse are common here, but it makes me wonder about the media’s influence on what occupies Huancaíno thoughts and on the general mood in Huancayo. Have Huancaínos become desensitized, more afraid or grateful for the life they have?

The major headlines of my life right now are:

  • “Strep Throat Hits Twice.”
  • “Playing Catch-Up Daily But Finding Balance.”
  • “Huancayo Celebrations and Me.”
  • “Fulfillment from Growing Friendships with People all Over the World.”

These are the headlines in Huancayo. What are the headlines in your life?
These headlines are the thoughts that automatically come to me when I highlight what’s been happening in my life. It’s a form of self-talk that, as Janet Callaway describes, can powerfully program your subconscious mind to help or hinder you. Your self-talk reinforces your way of thinking whether you are empowering yourself with optimism and positivity, or putting yourself down.

What are the major headlines of your life right now? Are they empowering you or holding you back from positive change and growth?

  • I watch the local news very regularly, we live in a pretty safe area. I am not saying crime is completely non existent, but yes, I want to see how the local government reacts and guarantees justice, that tells a lot about our country and the area which we live in.

I love the words which you are learning! Thanks for sharing it with us!
My recent post Fridays will be differentThanks to Janine Ripper!

    • Words of wisdom, Hajra! It makes a big difference if your area is already safe. Vancouver local news is definitely less negative than the news here in Huancayo. At the same time, when there are serious, violent news, those definitely make the front page still.

I'm also super curious to see how the new president will handle these types of situations!

I listen to NPR news. Haven't watched a TV broadcast in a long time. They can read about something horrible in one sec and have a smile the next about a kitten being cute. There is no connection to what is really going on.

For me, what is effecting me are all the budget cuts. They are the ones propelling me to write on Bornstoryteller.

  • Great post Samantha, sorry to hear about the strep throat. Hope you're feeling better.

Let's see if I can come up with some good headlines for my life right now. How about "Packing…The Woes of a Moving Blogger"? Then there would be, "Another World on The Other Side Of Town". Followed by "Watch Me Make It Happen" and "Changes." Those sound like really good blog titles as well! I may have to tackle one or two of them.

As far as the news is concerned… I'd have to agree with RAAckerman, that's just the news these days. It seems it's everywhere, and the news is more than happy to deliver it. I watch as much news as I can, but I've also learned to block out a majority of it. They can be opinion and idea formers in their delivery, and I would rather read the news for myself and form my own opinion; than to obtain a bias or hypocritical one from the televised media.

    • Thanks, Deeone! You're the first to notice and mention! =P I'm going to start taking a stronger antibiotic tomorrow. Hopefully, this will be the solution because I don't like taking all the meds. =(

Haha! I loved the headlines you came up with. It sounds like they describe your transition perfectly and you're right about them being stellar blog post titles. Can't wait to read them! =)

Great strategy to block out chunks of the news, so it doesn't negatively affect us and our lives. It's good to be informed, but it's *not* good to be negatively engrossed in it all!

  • Excellent reminder not to let the media and media-generated fear rule our lives. I think generating some positive headlines in our lives is a fun exercise (and isn't that what we personal bloggers do, generally, to come up with post titles and headings? 🙂 )

"Mom Gets Taste of Empty Nest as Kids Try Their Wings"
"Midlife Career Change Brings Fun, New Challenges"
"Feline Fracas Nothing More than Confused Cat"
"Drought Continues: Plants Begin to Eye Humans as Water Source" (with subheadings like, "Mosquitoes Attack Plants – "We Saw 'Em First!")
My recent post Angelic Angela- Child Mouthpiece of God

    • Yes! *We* are ultimately in control of how the headlines and news affect us! That's empowering. =)

Haha! Great comparison between headlines and post titles, Holly! Your creativity and wittiness really shines through the examples you've come up with! =) I loved getting to know you a bit better through them too. How exciting that you're in the middle of a career change!! Hope to support you the best I can! =)

  • RobertaBudvietas

I have long thought the media has too much influence on the way the average person thinks. So sad. And the thought that if it is not on TV or in the paper it is not true and the reverse, it must be true if the newspaper publishes it

    • Yes! The scary part is when we're unaware, but I think society is becoming more conscious about the media's influence. The scary part is what we equate with the truth when we're not trained in critical analysis. That's why it's so important to get the word out! =) Thanks for your thoughts, Roberta!

  • Self talk can often transforms itself into auto-suggestion or self-hypnosis. I try to auto-suggest or self-hypnotize myself with goals to perfect, stuff like never give up, be the best, live life to the limit, and never settle for mediocrity. It's really worked. I've consistently overcome adversity and have excelled at a variety of diverse endeavors.

    • I love the comparisons you made, Vinny! Those are some of the same ways I try to auto-suggest and self-hypnotize myself as well. =) "Live life to the limit" is one of my favorites! You are a true inspiration and I'm glad that I'm following some of the same tactics that you implement in your life!! =)

  • I’d also have to say that the media in the US is much the same, with negative and sensational headlines dominating. They think it’s what people want to hear, but I personally am very selective as to how I stay in touch with current events. My personal life if quite eventful these days. Self Empowerment and Realizing Gains are my latest headlines! 🙂

  • What surprises me the most are the NUMBER of newspapers and newspapers-like magazines you show on the photo… For a city of 336,000 inhabitants, there are 20 or so publications on the photo!! 10,000 readers for each one? I don't think so… (in bigger cities, like Tokio, there are two or tree newspapers… but with one million copies daily!)

    Saludos.
    Gonzalo
My recent post Halconazo- Los muertos

    • Haha! So true! Actually, a lot of them are national and not local papers. =P That might make more sense! There's really only one major local paper, "El Correo."

Thanks for dropping by, Gonzalo! Good to see you again and to see that you're writing! =)

    • HAHA! I hear you on struggling to keep up, Eric! I've been trying to make it a habit to respond to blog comments on the same they I receive them, but haven't been able to for the past two weeks. Things keep coming up! =P

Wow! I didn't know about this transition you're thinking about! I really hope you'll be able to switch to a work-at-home job! There are a lot of experts in the PBAU group that will surely be able to provide advice and I hope that I can support you too! =)

  • I've given up on local news. Here, it's usually more like, "Convenience store held up" "Firemen called to rescue cat in tree" "Has anyone seen old lady/man who wandered off" and the weather. I watch BBC news but as someone mentioned, it's so gloomy. I used to have fun watching MSNBC lash out at Bush. So I turn to the Mexican news and that's when I get a bellyful of laughter, scandal, craziness, international news that's never shown in the U.S. and some pedantic ramblings.
My news: When my life's at a standstill, that's when I'd better watch out."
My recent post Those Little Stones That Trip Us

    • Haha! I loved the summary headlines of news in you area, Pennie! =)

I've found BBC gloomy as well. How about CNN or NPR? Action-packed and varied! =P

Wow! What a cool description of Mexican news. I'll have to tune in myself. =)

Loved the thoughtful headline you came up with, Pennie! It speaks so true to how I've been filling my life these days too.

SOO glad we're in touch!! =)

  • I take the "head in the sand" approach when it comes to news. Unless John Stewart is covering it, fingers in my ears…LA, LA, LA, LA…I'm not listening. WAY too much negative stuff. And, yes, the message I believe can perpetuate the story it is telling. I tend to witness the best in people when I'm out involved in events where people show up to make a difference…and those seldom get news coverage. My headlines…THAT is a fabulous exercise, Samantha. Changes daily but way more focused these days on what I am doing to take my business to the next level instead of the past headlines about the fear or overwhelm holding me back…phew!
My recent post 5 Tips for Getting Things OFF Your Bucket List

    • Haha! =) Great take on this, Tambre! I've been sticking my head in the sand right alongside you. =) Sometimes I feel so out of the loop, when I don't know what's been happening, but if it's something big (or not), I often hear through the grapevine anyway. I love how you bring attention to the powerfully inspirational stories and messages that don't make it to the news. As you imply, I believe those should be valued too! =)

I am so ecstatic to hear about the change in headlines in your "personal newspaper." It sure does sound like you're on a roll with contagious energy and enthusiasm and all the while, keeping the memory of your husband present with you. =) Thanks for being such an inspiration, Tambre! =)

  • Ah I've cut back on the news-watching since the whole Osama thing when the media hysteria went into overdrive…From the little I've watched, the ash clouds from the volcano eruption in South America are making big headlines as flights have been cancelled right across Australia.
    My recent post Carpe Diem

    • Good for you! Sometimes, we need to be reminded that the world is not going to disappear if we don't keep up with the news. =P I haven't been a news watcher/listener because I don't have a television and my Internet connection is too poor. Haha! =) It's been a benefit! =)

  • My self talk is generally not very positive or affirming. I'm usually beating myself up about something. I try to be positive, but well it doesn't always work. Especially lately when my headlines would read kind of like this…. "Husband out of work almost 4 months, is foreclosure next?" or "As Parents Grow Older, the Kids become the Parent"
My recent post You Are Beautiful

    • I definitely rollercoaster between the two, Lalia! But whenever my self-talk is self-defeating, I try to consciously turn it around.

      How about the following? =)
"Husband out of work and can spend more time with the family!"
"As parents grow older, kids learn to identify"

      Hehe! =)

  • Hey Samantha,

    My headlines:

"Mother freaks out when son comes home with bad grades."
    "Frick, it's hot here!"
    "Lose 10 pounds now!"
"Life is good and other fantasies to wish by because you don't live a Disney life."
"Really? That is what you ate for breakfast?"
    "Coffee, my best friend."
"Life is good when you make it good and stop whining."

    I could go on.

No news for me. I know bad stuff happens. I like my bubble.

    🙂

  • Hi Sam
Major headlines in the UK are about the ongoing recession.
2.5 million people out of work and no end in sight.
What a state we are in.

    Enough gloom.
Notice that your comments are increasing and that you are really interacting – well done.

Anyway – back to your vocabulary practice. LOL

    Cheers Sam

    • Bummer! The recession can be depressing indeed. At the same time, I just read an article recently about how the recession has made people more frugal (duh), but that means that they're valuing relationships more when it comes to choosing businesses. That's a positive spin on it! =)

Wow! Thanks for noticing, Keith! =) I'm actually having a hard time making a point of responding to comments on the same day that they're posted. That's my current challenge! =) But I do love interacting with others, including you, Keith! =)

I try to make it a habit to comment on the person's latest post if they comment on my blog, but what should I do with you?! =) Please do let me know how I can continue to support you if I pay a visit to "Easy Public Speaking" and find that I've already commented on the latest posts. Comments on older posts? =)

  • Wow, Samantha, another powerful post! I watch NBC Nightly News in the US because on Fridays they have their Making a Difference series featuring someone who is doing good in the world.
My headlines today would be, “The Kids Start Summer Vacation Tomorrow, Will She Continue to Post on Her Blog Everyday?”
Thanks for sharing your insights with us!

    • WOW! =) Now that's a positive spin on news! Thanks for sharing that, Carolyn! I'll be on the lookout for their Making a Difference series on YouTube. They recently featured Team Hoyt again — their story *always* makes me cry!! =P

Haha!! =) Loved your latest headline. I just noticed that you post daily when I visited your blog today and was thoroughly amazed! =P Although I'm sure you'll keep all your avid followers, including me, even if you don't post daily! =P

  • My headline would be:
    1) Major transition in life
    2) surrounded by dumb animals
    3) bickering with fiance 24/7
    4) annoying parents
My recent post Every water is created differently

    • HAHA! =) You are hilarious, Hilda! Thanks for making me laugh! I knew about the transition and suspected bickering with the new move, which can be stressful, but the animals and parents issues are new to me. =) I hope you don't let them bother you too much, so you keep that beautiful smile on your face! =) Hugs!

  • Haha! Actually, about half of what's up on newsstands here are tabloids on minor celebrities too! =P I think there's a lot of truth in how you say that this "news" is for "keeping people's mind occupied." No wonder I don't buy those — I have better things to occupy my mind! =P

Love that words could make you feel like you were in Peru! =) Your words do the same for London! =)

  • Haha! =) PBAU truly has been a success and only in it's first day! This is so exciting! Saw your message about your page views and am so excited to contribute to the success of your blog too, Thom! =) Thanks so much for leaving a note! =)

  • I often wonder the same, Mary! I'm sure that negative thoughts somehow bring more negativity to our lives similarly to the how the law of attraction and positive thoughts bring positivity.

In any case, I'm glad that you're turning away from depressing news! =)

  • Hello Samantha –

I have often contemplated the immense negative effects that the media has on public thinking. Eighty percent 80% of what is reported is terrible news. In fact, in many ways as you suggest in your post above, the terrible aspects we hear about everyday has become a way of life for people. Maybe we all aren't living the nightmares as we hear, we are terrified and also desensitized in many ways. It's like the bad news is going in one hear and out the other without giving much consideration towards it. Thank you. 🙂

    • Yes! That's the scary part — when we don't hear it anymore. It's going to turn into a "boy cried wolf" situation in which we won't even listen when there is really truly something we should pay attention to! =P

Thanks for your thoughts, Charlie! =)

  • I watch the local news in my country every day. Killings, robbery, rape happen in every corner. From my own perspective, lack of education and poverty are two main reasons that forces people to commit crime.

    • Wow! It's actually somewhat comforting to know that the depressing news isn't limited to Peru. From your website, I'm assuming you're in the UK?

Lack of education and poverty seem like determining factors here as well. The people who have a lot of time on their hands and who are depressed with their lives are the often the ones out there, releasing their frustration and anger into society!

Thanks so much for your thoughts, Paul!

  • I watch the local news and keep up to date with the headlines via the internet. My village is pretty safe with usually only one or two 'crimes' reported a month – missing garden ornaments being the last one! But I have lived in and visited pplaces that the media manipulate into some kind of crazy dangerous metropolis and it does seem a shame that those headlines then cloud everyone elses opinion. I think the same can be said of life – the headlines created for you by others are often what you end up living by if you're not careful.

    • Wow! You are one lucky gal! That's why I always knew there were advantages to living in little villages. =) I hope you weren't the one who stole those garden ornaments, Lucy! =) Just kidding! =)

It's true that the media really sensationalizes a lot of what really goes on in cities and I loved your conclusion about the role of headlines in our lives as well! Loved your thoughts, Lucy! Thanks for sharing them! =)

  • I also stopped watching the news years ago. It was so depressing and they very seldom ever had anything uplifting to share. It's not that I don't sympathize with the people who are dealing with these tragedies but there isn't anything I can do for them so why dwell on all the horrible things that are happening around me.

I'm like you Samantha, my brain is always filled with positive thoughts throughout my day. The lovely Miss Janet is so right. My headlines read something like "Celebrating Another Day" or "Exciting Adventures Await". Yep, that's me!

As always, I love visiting your place and reading the interesting things you share with us. I love learning through you and sharing your experiences as each day goes by. Thanks again my young friend. Now, enjoy the beautiful day!

    Adrienne
My recent post How To Optimize Your Blog For Mobile Phones

    • Yes, exactly, Adrienne! To me, it almost comes down to percentages. Yes, we need to know about the tragedies and we need to care about those people, but how about a commitment to 50/50 in terms of positivity and negativity in the media! That would be more representative of what's really happening in the world.

Adrienne, you totally help me keep positivity in my life headlines too! =) Thank you, as always, for being up beat and for sharing your energetic headlines! =)

  • This reminds me so much of the Philippines where most news (esp. on tv) are highly sensationalized and you only hear about corrupt politicians, rapists, 'massacres' (a highly overused and misused term), etc. Your post reminded me of a point in the Sociology of Mass Media where you realize it's cyclical: 'reality' and what is portrayed by media…each reinforcing, shaping the other. As to your question…What would my headlines be?…hmmm…."37 year old woman, death by treadmill"… hahaha! Thanks for making me think, Samantha! I have to mull this one over….. :-))

    • Oh yes! Corrupt politicians is a big one here too. I'm also reminded of Filipino tabloids — they abound in my home in Vancouver because people bring them over whenever they visit us from the Phils! =P It's hard to tell, but in the photo above, a lot of the "newspapers" hanging are mostly tabloids too! =P

That's the perfect way to describe it, Joy. It's *both* the chicken and the egg!

HAHA! =) Loved your headline, Joy! Hope you've tackled the treadmill a few more times since we last chatted!! =)

  • Very thought-provoking post, Samantha. It's amazing the power of our own minds, how we can transform what we do just by moving one step at a time in a positive way. The fact that I need to pause before knowing what my headline is means that I really do need to develop some–otherwise, where am I going? And so sorry to hear about the strep throat–hope not to see that headline again for you 🙂
My recent post After The Rain

    • Ooh! Great point, Alexandra! Our powerful minds are indeed shaping how we react to our world! HAHA! And it's so true that personal headlines can also function as a purpose. I've got to get mine straight as well! =P

And thanks for the kind words about the strep throat. Still fighting the battle, but at least it's a fight!! =)

  • Sam, aloha. Thx so much for the mention in your terrific post. Love that you are educating others on self talk as well.

Quite honestly, I cannot even remember how long ago I gave up reading or listening to the news. With what pops up automatically on the computer and what I hear people say in the stories, I know more than I care to know about life in the world outside of mine.

    My headlines:

It's another glorious day in Paradise
I love how everything is coming into place
It's so great that all my communications with people are clear and well received
    I love my life

What a terrific idea to ask people for the headlines of their lives. Well done, my friend. Until next time, aloha. Janet

I love how you prioritize people's stories over newspapers! =) I've learned to appreciate people's stories more and more here in the Andes where everyone has something beautiful and interesting to share! =)

Your headlines made me smile, reminding me that the world is a beautiful place! =) I need some more Janet news in my life! =)

  • Hi Sam,

I have stopped watching news intentionally for over a year. I have been very selective of what I watch or read and it was a challenge to stop watching CNN every morning. I was addicted to news and needed to know what's going on in the world. However, one day I read somewhere that if the news is big, it will get to you by word of mouth 🙂

I think regardless of where you are in the world, people do find news interesting as it gives them something to talk about with friends!
    My recent post Changing Directions

    • Loved your perspective, Diana! I've had moments of near news addiction too and I sometimes wonder, when I don't watch the news, if I'm missing out on anything important! But it's so true that we'll hear about it if it's important! People will pass it on because it's definitely perfect for conversation pieces. =)

What a cool take on this, Diana! Thank you! =)

  • I have to agree with you on this. Media has an awfully huge responsibility on peoples minds and only a few of them realizes that self-talking to your subcoscious mind could be the solution for beeing able to distinguish between media-driven and the real world, such as making your own life happier.

    • Virag, it's so great to meet you! I just stopped by your blog and loved your international story. I also loved that you've made yourself a home back in your original home of Hungary! =)

I love how you frame media's role as its "responsibility." If only they thought of it this way as they may be more conscious of how they influence society and the general population's "subconscious mind," as you say.

Thanks so much for reaching out, Virag! Can't wait to keep in touch! =)

  • Fantastic post Samantha. Our self talk can influence our life markedly – so much more sense to make it something positive, a can do. It really does make you feel better and is a powerful way to influence our subsconscious.
It is something I endeavour to do, to maintain a frame of mind that is open, fills my heart up and gives me strength.

You inspire me with the way you do so naturally in your life. Thanks so much for your comment, friend! =) Hugs!

  • This is such a great post! Yes, self-talk helps oneself a lot in both good and bad ways at times. Honestly though, the news can be so depressing these days but there are some very nice heart-warming stories, too but that's very rare these days.

Not too certain what my current life headlines would be – but good thought to ponder 😉

  • Hi Samantha,
As long as people are gobbling up negativity, people will keep writing about it. I haven't read a newspaper or watched the news in years because it makes my "vibes" go low.

The major headlines for me lately are all about success. Success in business, health, relationships and so on.

I learned about self-talk many years ago and it is so important that we monitor our internal dialogue as mus as we can because we believe what we tell ourselves.
My recent post 5 Ways To Prevent Rejection From Ever Affecting You

    • That's the truth, Justin! Negativity becomes juicy gossip that people like to pass around, but I completely identify with how negative news can affect your "vibes" and mood.

I'm inspired by the major headlines in your life and hope to continue monitor my internal dialogue as you describe. =) Thanks for the reframing it that way for me! =)

  • I guess crimes really happen in any parts of the world. Although I haven't read the newspapers regularly, I see to it that I could be able to watch the news on television. It is because whether the news is good or bad, I wanted to keep updated to important events. Refraining from news to be able to increase optimism is also a good thing. Thanks for the interesting post.
My recent post Comparer les forfaits mobiles

    • You bring up a really good point, Andy! The crimes that have happened to me here have also happened in New York. It's hard to compare developed and developing countries on these terms.

I love how you provide both sides to the story. News helps us keep up to date, but staying away from the news can keep us positive! =) I guess it comes down to personal choice. =)

So great to meet you, Andy! Thanks so much for stopping by! Heading over to check out your blogs right now! =)

  • Hey Samantha!

This was a great post and really made me think. Before your questions surfaced at the end, I had already identified what one of my main headlines are right now:

    Growth!

Yup, that's it, Growth. I'm at a point; age and experience where my focus is about growth. Not only on a personal development scale, but in all areas to become better at what ever I do: at being a husband, father, professionally and as a friend.

It's an empowering feeling; gives me a great sense of inspiration to keep trucking away!

    PEACE

How inspiring and motivating to hear that you're growing in all areas! =) Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this, friend! =)

  • I'm not sure the the U.S. is that much different than Huancayo in that aspect. The headlines of our newspapers often mention growing unemployment, murders, rapes, kidnappings and a plunging economy. Yes, we are more developed and probably have lower impoverished numbers, but the economy is creating a lot of angst for many in the U.S. My family has its own issues and we try to not add to it by becoming too embroiled in the negativity. Somehow, we have to find hope in the little things. They are what add up to the bigger things that truly impact our lives. They empower us to make positive change and growth, so that we may move forward in life.

    • Yikes! For some reason, I don't remember news being so depressing in Vancouver. It was more informational, but maybe I'm imagining it wrong. =P It's true that there has always been this call for more optimistic news though and you bring up a good point about the economy.

I really admire you and your family's commitment to remaining optimistic! =) That's a powerful life lesson for me, Sherry. Thank you!

  • Thank you so much for your comment, friend! =) It's definitely kind of scary how we treat each other these days — or at least what shows up on the news about this. I wholeheartedly agree that we should honor each other more. =)
